Manually operated sliding shutters made to measure
For the owners in the private residence, opening and closing the new sliding shutters has become a small ritual with which the day begins and ends. The owner is a trained electrician and the automation of the sliding shutters would have been easy for him. But they deliberately chose to operate the shading systems manually.
Renovation of a residential house: sliding shutters instead of roller shutters
The house with a gable roof and white façade was built in 1974 and is located in the district of Böblingen. In 2015, the current owners discovered it and renovated it thoroughly. The windows and terrace fronts were also renewed in the process. Today, the building opens to the northern side of the street via five smaller windows; on the west side, a loggia and a garden exit were fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows. In the gable, there is another mullioned window that adds a homely accent to the modern façade. The associated shading system was also redesigned: the existing roller shutters in the old building were removed and the windows and terrace fronts were supplemented with three custom-made sliding shutter systems made of wood and aluminium by Baier. With their modern but homely appearance, they are an eye-catcher in the white plastered façade.
Sliding shutters are not only more visually appealing than roller shutters, but also offer practical advantages:
- Today’s energy-efficient construction methods create completely sealed building envelopes where cold bridges between the inside and outside must be avoided. One example of this is thermal insulation systems that are used in the context of major renovations. Because sliding shutters are not integrated into the window or the masonry, the dreaded cold spots do not occur.
- Sliding shutters can be used with both closed and open windows. In this way, the sliding shutters offer protection from the sun and still provide fresh air.
- Modern sliding shutters can be made in any size, many colours and materials. In this way, sun protection can be found for every building project to help shape the façade.
- With venetian blinds and external venetian blinds, there is a risk of strong draughts damaging the system, especially when the window is open. The stable construction of sliding shutters virtually eliminates this risk.
Made-to-measure sliding shutters ensure lively façade design
Baier offers a wide selection of different sliding shutter models in its portfolio. In the case of the renovated residential building, the Freiburg model was chosen, which appears almost frameless. The sliding shutters consist of a frame with a circumferential extruded aluminium profile and a filling of horizontal larch wood slats. Both materials are based on the existing colours and materials on the façade: the larch wood deliberately borrows from the wooden wall cladding of the loggia on the first floor. The powder-coated aluminium frames are based on the colour of the window frames.
Manual sliding shutters provide shading as needed
The sliding shutters provide privacy and sun protection as needed and, in the case of this detached house, can be operated manually. This works both when the window is closed and when it is open. In this way, the sliding shutters provide reliable protection from the sun while still allowing ventilation.
The upper and lower guides were attached to stainless steel consoles on site. The upper guide is hidden behind a cover panel made of folded sheet metal. Depending on the requirements, the sliding shutters were guided in the lower guide rail either selectively and above the window sill or continuously below the window sill. In the case of point guidance, the sliding shutters are guided by means of stainless steel mounting brackets and gliders mounted on the wall. With the “continuous guide” variant, the running rail is fixed to the wall and the sliding shutters are fitted with edge brackets and gliders.
Building sliding shutters yourself? We can support you
Sliding shutters from Baier can be made to measure at the factory, as in the case of the detached house in Eitelbuß, and installed by our experts. However, experienced do-it-yourselfers can also install the shades themselves if they wish. For system components such as frames, fittings or drives, we still recommend that you purchase the accessories directly from Baier. This is because sliding shutters are systems in which the system components are closely interlocked. The sliding shutter curtain, on the other hand, can be built by yourself. If you wish, we can supply you with the frame in the desired RAL colour and you can take care of the rest of the work. Close coordination is recommended in any case. We look forward to the next challenge with you.
