Hombroich Sculpture Hall

About the object

The Museum Island Hombroich is located in a renaturalised park and floodplain landscape. Here, in a privately initiated exhibition district, on the site of the rocket station, the sculpture hall designed by Thomas Schütte fits in perfectly. The imposing building was created in a remarkable collaboration between the artist and the Düsseldorf architectural firm RKW with the aim of achieving a result of the highest quality. It took three and a half years from the planning stage to the completed building, which serves, among other things, to exhibit other people’s works as well as to store his own sculptures. The exhibition hall, built on an elliptical floor plan, is appealing because of its marked variety of carefully selected materials, which were always tested, questioned and further developed on site.

Hotspot of the art scene – Baier was there

Developing and building with lasting value at a high level – the family-run company from Renchtal fitted into the overall concept. Under architectural and artistic influences, large rooms with intelligently controllable direct as well as indirect light have been created. High-quality, aesthetic and economical – this is what Baier’s extraordinary sliding-folding systems stand for. Structural conditions and unusual design requirements were taken into account in the development of the movable folding shutters and individually realised. Two 8-panel sliding-folding shutter systems were supplied, each with 4 panels sliding to the right and left. The individual shutters consist of a perforated sheet metal cassette, folded and welded all around, the pattern of which was specially made according to the architect’s specifications and given a premium coating. The specially treated surface is weather-resistant and has a high colour fastness.

Perforated folding shutters – The result speaks for itself

The folding shutters made of green steel contrast with the external appearance of the hall and reveal the artistic influence. The space-saving design parallel to the façade blends seamlessly into the overall design. The energy-saving drives are almost “invisible” with sheet metal cladding and in no way interfere with the flush construction. Slow starting and gentle braking and stopping, with a low noise level, are among the product’s advantages. The fittings used by Baier ensure long-lasting use through precise functionality and meet all requirements for comfort, safety and quality. Flawlessly and reliably, they withstand the changing temperatures of summer and winter.
