EMPL vehicle factory Zahna-Elster

About the object

In order to expand the German location in a forward-looking way, the Tyrolean family-owned company has now invested 20 million euros in the construction of a new modern assembly plant and customer centre at the Zahna-Elster site. The structural expansion to more than 8,500 square metres includes, among other things, a production hall, a building for vehicle handover including offices and seminar rooms, a wash hall and various test stations. The client EMPL Fahrzeugwerk GmbH commissioned the Innsbruck-based architectural firm Giner + Wucherer Architekten with the construction, which was completed in 2022. In order to realise an oversized architectural sun protection system, the expertise of Baier was brought on board.

Architectural highlight: The representative handover area for vehicles

A visual highlight of the new EMPL building in Zahna-Elster is a building attached to the assembly hall, which is used for the representative handover of the fire engines to the buyers. As in the assembly hall, a steel hall construction forms the basis for the two-storey building. The partially glazed ground floor houses offices, toilets and technical rooms in addition to three vehicle handover areas, while the mezzanine level houses an exhibition area for fire brigade accessories. The upper floor is used for training courses and seminars. A kitchenette with a lounge area, office space and toilets are also located upstairs

Folding sliding shutters emphasise modern façade appearance
unterstreichen moderne Fassadenoptik

To provide reliable protection from the sun, folding sliding shutters made of powder-coated expanded metal in oversize from Baier were installed on the modern façade on the upper floor. These are 31 double-leaf motorised modules that close in a V-shape, as well as 26 fixed shutters over approximately 70 running metres. The special feature: all modules are manufactured in such a way that they not only shade the window front, but also envelop the entire façade like a translucent cloak.

Planning-intensive south façade

Because the front upper edge of the building is slanted on the south side, the expanded metal shutters had to be individually adapted. The project-specific framework conditions demanded intensive and meticulous advance planning and neat precision work during production and installation.

Proven quality also for oversized sliding-folding shutters

The installation at the EMPL plant in Zahna-Elster impressively demonstrates that Baier not only develops customised privacy and sun protection systems based on structural conditions and design requirements. Even with oversized modules, the sun protection experts do not make any compromises when it comes to statics, production, transport or installation. On the new EMPL building, the vertically mounted folding sliding shutters are 800 millimetres wide and about 5,400 millimetres high.

Facade construction and folding sliding shutters technically interlocked
und Faltschiebeläden technisch verzahnt

To ensure that the large folding sliding shutters could be installed perfectly and looked appealing, a close interlocking of technology and appearance was crucial. An easy task for the Baier company, which generally attaches great importance to architecturally appealing sun protection. In the case of the EMPL building, close cooperation with the façade builder was also necessary. This is because the substructure of the folding sliding shutters, including guide rails, running rails and motors, is located under the Alucobond metal façade. Even the stainless steel fastening brackets were mounted directly on the shell under the metal façade. In this way, no technical components interfere with the façade and the façade appears homogeneous.

Space-saving solar shading and homogeneous façade cladding made to measure

Folding sliding shutters from Baier that close parallel to the façade, as shown here on the new EMPL building, are among Baier’s particularly high-quality sun protection systems. They are not only particularly space-saving, but also architecturally attractive. The cubically designed EMPL handover building is a classic example of this. Here, too, the folding sliding shutters are inseparably connected to the façade and are effective both when open and closed:

When the shutters are closed, the entire upper storey is covered by the powder-coated expanded metal. The joints between the folding sliding shutters are minimal, so that the façade on the upper floor appears to be made of one piece. When the shutters are opened, the wings slide to the side in a v-shape and stand out from the façade at a 90° angle. This way they are hardly noticeable. The powder-coated expanded metal underlines the industrial flair of the complex.

Proven partner when it comes to architectural sun protection

The customised folding sliding shutters make the façade of EMPL’s new factory an eye-catcher. The sun protection system also leaves nothing to be desired in terms of function. The expanded metal for façade cladding blocks the sun’s rays and heat before it gets too warm in the room and the air conditioning has to cool it down. Nevertheless, enough light can fall into the interior so that one does not have to rely on electric light. And with motorised manufacturing, the sunshade is a breeze to use.

If you are looking for architectural sun protection or oversized sliding shutters, we look forward to hearing from you. Whether consultation, planning, customisation or installation: together we will find the best solution for your project.
