Roof window replacement Achern

About the object

Despite massive construction and long life cycles, every residential building is probably due for renovation sooner or later. After many years of use, the roller shutter belt of the attic window had broken and had to be repaired or completely replaced.

The homeowners and occupants of the two-storey single-family house with a gable roof not only opted for a functional solution, but also increased the quality of the room by enlarging the window opening. The wish was to get more light into the attic and to extend the view. For more headroom in the area of the window, the skylight was installed with an additional built-on wedge. Like its predecessor, the roller shutter was mounted on the outside to provide optimal light and temperature conditions as sun protection.

Removal, delivery and installation of the new skylight

In the course of the conversion, the old window was dismantled and disposed of. The roof tiles and insulation were then partially removed so that the roof opening could be enlarged. The next step was to adjust the rafters so that the new Roto Designo R8 roof window could be installed. To increase the headroom, the builders opted for a wedge frame with inner lining and window sill. To ensure that the Baier roller shutters fit almost all roof windows known on the market, the Renchen-based company developed three different basic types. For the selected Roto Designo R8, a 100 series roller shutter is provided, which, in addition to the Roto R6, also fits the new “K” roof window generation from Velux.

The advantages of wedge frames

Normally, skylights are installed flush with the surface so that they have the same angle of inclination as the roof surface. The advantage of wedge frames is that the steeper installation of about 10° creates a dormer-like projection, which provides more headroom and space inside. Although the external cubature is broken at the point of the skylight by wedge frames, these are usually not associated with obtaining planning permission, which has made them a popular conversion option compared to a classic dormer.

Adapting the living space

After dismantling and the remaining preparatory work, the new skylight could finally be installed and framed with the necessary thermal insulation. The remaining roof layers were adapted and the roller shutter installed. In order to achieve a visually perfect result and not to compromise the tightness of the roof, the previously removed tiles were trimmed and then re-roofed. But the living space was also reworked. Before the conversion work, a cupboard with doors had been installed along the entire length of the room in the sloping roof. The jamb cupboard under the new skylight then had to be adapted and restored.

Individual in shape and control

Thanks to the three basic types, roller shutters can be manufactured on all common types of roof windows. But special solutions and finishes are also conceivable. The operation varies between manual and electric, the latter being radio or solar controlled. The residents of the single-family house in Achern opted for manual operation by crank, which allows them to individually control the element directly at the window.
