The planning and implementation of renovation work on listed buildings requires careful consideration of the requirements stipulated by the relevant heritage authorities. Particularly in the case of extensive renovations and conversions of historic buildings, the authorities in the respective federal state examine how and with which materials the renovation work may be carried out. As a general rule, the building envelope, in particular, should be preserved as close to the original as possible. Any externally visible changes must be approved by the heritage authorities.
